The Director of Distribution Operations is located in Bellingham, MA and is responsible for the effective/safe operation of the transportation, storage, distribution activities and facility management at all United East office/distributions centers. 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Regional Vice President of Operations with a dotted line to the divisional General Manager, the Director of Distribution Operations will be an experienced, hands-on Distribution Center leader with a demonstrable history of leading high volume picking operations in a continuous improvement culture.  Responsibilities include all distribution functions, logistics, and facilities with a consistent focus on staff development and safety. A key member of the division’s senior management team, the Director of Distribution Operations will collaborate with peers in Sales, Finance, and Purchasing to deliver strategic objectives in alignment with corporate and divisional goals and in accordance with organizational policies and applicable government laws and regulations.  

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in distribution center management with a history of efficiency, safety, and execution
  • Prior experience managing to a budget
  • Prior management experience with departments of 100+ employees
  • Experience with ERP and automated warehouse management systems including RF devices
  • Experience with Conveyor Systems and/or Pick Module implementations desirable

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Functional ownership of high volume, multi-shift 365,000 square foot Distribution Center operating 24×6 staffed with roughly 140 employees that include 30 supply drivers and third-party delivery companies
  • Establish a hands-on, persistent warehouse presence and leadership style that will promote a culture ultimately adopted by all warehouse managers and supervisors
  • Contribute to the development of divisional strategic objectives and management of the organization
  • Evaluate, upgrade, and implement an appropriate system of operational policies, internal controls, and procedures
  • Develop, promote, and execute a continuous improvement culture and strategy
  • Act as a key leader of WMS implementation team and having ownership of a successful launch
  • Be responsible for tracking key KPI/Metrics to ensure cost and executional performance
  • Lead and coach the Distribution Center management team to ensure they are informed of operational objectives and are complying with all policies and procedures
  • Collaborate with Financial, Sales, and Purchasing leaders to ensure customer requirements/standards are met or exceeded consistently
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach: assign accountabilities; set objectives; establish priorities; and monitor and evaluate results
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, conduct annual performance appraisals, and recommend salary adjustments
  • Ensure staff members receive timely and appropriate training and development.
  • Document and manage performance deficiencies
  • Coach managers to resolve issues between departments and mediate as necessary
  • Oversee day-to-day operational issues and vendor management for facilities, security systems, HVAC, and vehicle leases
  • Working with the divisional Safety Supervisor, create, implement, and maintain safety programs for all areas of the division to ensuring compliance with all state and federal laws
  • Participant with key members of senior management on financial planning, budgeting, cash flow and policy matters
  • Prepare and submit an annual operational budget, manage effectively within this budget, and report accurately on progress made and challenges encountered

COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong proven knowledge of Distribution Center processes
  • People-oriented, self-motivated, aggressive yet flexible
  • MS Office proficiency with intermediate to advanced Excel knowledge
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated success in negotiation with vendors
  • Proven success as a leader and team builder while motivating and directing staff
  • Must be detail oriented, hands on and positive with a strong work ethic and an unwavering commitment to customer service
  • Working knowledge of Material Handling Equipment
  • Working knowledge of inventory control procedures
  • Truck load and LTL tariff and logistics knowledge
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and FMCSA regulations (non-CDL drivers)
  • Ability to schedule and direct contractors for facility maintenance, upgrade and/or repairs.
