Overview

Assistant Manager assists the Surgical Services Director in directing and coordinating activities of patient care within assigned departments- OP, RR, AOP, and SPD.

Assists with developing specific departmental goals, standards, and objectives which directly support the strategic plan and vision of the organization.

Manages staff relations including performance management, staff satisfaction, and conflict management. Performs and oversees scheduling, staff development, recruitment, payroll, and student engagements.

Monitors departmental budgets, regulatory compliance, departmental contracts, and vendor relations. Determines and justifies needs for systems/equipment/supplies purchases, monitors usage, and oversees proper working order and/or stock supplies.

Assesses the quality of patient care delivered and coordinates patient care services with patients, staff, physicians, and other departments. May provide patient care when necessary.

Creates and fosters an environment that encourages professional growth.

Integrates evidence-based practices into operations and clinical protocols.

Follows established policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.

Assists Manager with supervisory role of all departments encompassed in surgical services- Ambulatory pre-op, Operating Room, Recovery Room, Sterile Processing, and Interventional Radiology.

Willing and able to demonstrate appropriate core competencies annually or as requested.

Assists with the provision of leadership/direction in accordance with organizational and department goals and objectives.

Supervises all nursing activities related to patient care.

Adheres to and promotes the nursing services behavior standards.

Prepares work, call and late shift schedules, assigns personnel and adjusts staffing according to scheduled procedures in coordination with manager.

Participates in the development, evaluation, revision and maintenance of department policies and procedures. objectives, quality assessment and improvement, safety and environment, and infection control standards.

Acts as a liaison between physician and patient care team.

Assists in the provision and coordination of clinical learning experiences for staff and students.

Seeks assistance from appropriate resource person as necessary in solving clinical and management problems.

Works with team to assure all necessary equipment and supplies are available for surgical procedures.

Maintains required records and reports as requested.

Participates on nursing/hospital committees and professional nursing organizations.

Provides leadership for staff and serves as clinical resource person.

Assists in the provision of orientation training and information concerning continuing education for staff.

Assists in the promotion of an environment in which the patient care team can work cooperatively toward objectives.

Assist in the development of awareness of standards to ensure compliance with the Joint Commission (TJC) and other regulatory agencies.

Assists in the monitoring of professional appearance as a role model to staff.

Assists with payroll/time clock duties.

Maintains active knowledge of AORN standards and guidelines.

Communicates in an assertive manner.

Promotes good interpersonal relationship with staff, Physicians, administration and public.

Demonstrates appropriate professional judgment, shows responsibility and accountability for personal conduct.

Maintains professionalism in community.

Serves as patient advocate at all times.

Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Completes annual educational requirements.

Understands and adheres to Bell’s compliance standards as they appear in Bell’s Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.

Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Bell regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.

Ensures that the staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs.

Computer and/or keyboarding skills required. Excellent human relations and oral/written communication. Excellent organizational abilities. Demonstrated teamwork skills. Ability to deal with change. Demonstrates a positive attitude towards initiating continuous improvement. Ability to respond appropriately even in challenging situations. Ability to work without direct supervision. Knowledge of new trends and techniques in nursing (perioperative).Demonstrated leadership abilities through documented reference(s).Clinically competent and demonstrates quality nursing care to patients.

*Minimum Education*Graduate of a school of nursing. Eligible for or currently licensed as a professional nurse in Michigan. Preferred: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing

*Required Skills*Certifications: X Basic Life Support (BLS)

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Licenses: Current License to practice as an RN in the State of Michigan Primary Source Verification: Michigan Board of Nursing

ACLS Required within 1 year of hire in department.

PALS recommended.

*Minimum Work Experience*Three to five years clinical experience.
