Overview
Supervises daily CDS staff activities and operations for CDI department in conjunction with the CFO. Assists the CFO in planning, organizing and evaluating the activities of CDI associates engaged in all CDI related functions. Leads the facilitation of improvement in the overall quality, completeness, and accuracy of clinical documentation. Through concurrent interaction with physicians, mid-levels, case managers, Quality team members, CNO, coders and other health care team members, the Clinical Documentation Specialist, will strive to ensure that there is comprehensive medical record documentation contained in our legal medical record that reflects the clinical treatment, decisions, and diagnosis for all inpatients. Serving as our source to all members of the health care team and of the revenue cycle team on documentation compliance guidelines, this position will provide guidance and support, as well as assist with education and training related to improving clinical documentation.

X Bachelor’s degree in nursing – Required.

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Must have knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and use of reference texts. Verbal ability is required to comprehend and utilize words effectively when preparing technical reports, abstracts, communicating with department associates, other hospital departments, and the medical staff. Must have ability to administer and supervise the entire department. Must have the ability to follow directions and adjust to change as indicated. Must have knowledge of all aspects of CDI areas, including quality, reporting, and productivity requirements.

State of Tennessee or Multi-State Registered Nurse licensure – Required

5 years’ experience in adult inpatient medical/surgical or critical care nursing – Required.
2 years’ experience as a clinical documentation specialist in an acute care setting – Required
Supervisory/Leadership experience – Preferred
