Overview
The Surgical Services Technologist assists with the total care given by the interdisciplinary team members to the surgical patient under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Patient care is provided in preoperative preparation, intra – and post – operative assessments, and the planning and delivery of care.
* Prepares for surgical cases by anticipating the needs and having supplies, instruments, and equipment readily available. Assists with room preparation to facilitate patient turnover.
* Provides visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation.
* Utilizes appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.
* Assists with body plane closure, application of wound dressings, and securing of drainage systems.

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Certifications:
Required: Basic Life Support (BLS)
Current credential as a surgical technologist (CST) issued by the National Board of Surgical Technologist and Surgical Assistant (NBSTSA).
Current License to practice as a surgical technologist in the state of Virginia.
*Minimum Work Experience*
Preferred: One year experience as a surgical technician in General, GYN, Urology and Orthopedic procedures.
