Summary

Our client is seeking to on-board a Controller to oversee our finance department.  This individual must be a player/coach and willing to roll up their sleeves to work with the team as needed.  This position will be responsible to oversee all things financial for our client involving construction, property management, etc.  All AR/AP, all divisions of business P&L’s, as well as working with all customers and vendors to ensure smooth and seamless financial business flow each month.  You will be assisting with (but not limited to) close outs, reporting, scheduling, procurement, liaison between company and client financially, all commissions, equity forecasting, etc..

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily accounting and reporting of the property portfolio.
  • Lead and develop property accountants, establishing performance objectives and goals for each team member to increase the operational excellence of the property accounting function.
  • Maintain a strong internal control structure. Improve processes to maintain quality and improve efficiency.
  • Manage the financial reporting system used in the preparation of property financial reports to ensure data integrity, operating efficiencies, timeliness of data imports, and accuracy.
  • Assist or lead in special projects to improve the department’s operations and serve the needs of asset managers.
  • Coordinate with accounting staff, third-party property managers, and asset management to ensure timely and accurate reporting of financial statements and operating metrics.
  • Oversee the preparation of quarterly property analytical reviews, including a review of operating results with asset managers and executive management.
  • Coordinate accounting and reporting for stand-alone property financial statements, including joint venture entities. Lead and manage the audit process for stand-alone financial statements as applicable.
  • Assist the financial reporting team with external auditors during annual audits and quarterly reviews, including completing required work papers, and SOX documentation.
  • Lead the preparation and review of property financial information for SEC filings and investor presentations. Review deliverables to ensure that work is consistent, accurate, and adheres to regulatory/department policies and procedures.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • BS in Accounting.
  • Ideal candidate will have previous experience in construction or property management. 
  • Must have 5+ years of Sr. Accounting or Controller experience.
  • Experience leading a team of 3-10 individuals of diverse backgrounds, personalities, and skill sets.
  • Understanding of US GAAP accounting standards applicable to the real estate industry.
  • Familiarity with partnership/joint venture accounting.
  • Expert with MS Excel software, intermediate with other MS Office software.
  • Project management experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work professionally with colleagues at all levels, including the CFO and President of Asset Management.
  • A propensity to roll up one’s sleeves and do the work that needs to be done.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with REITs.
  • Experience implementing ERP and/or property management software.
  • Experience with SEC financial reporting
