Overview
Enables mothers and families to make informed infant feeding choices, initiate and maintain lactation, overcome obstacles, prevent premature weaning and enhance maternal role satisfaction.
Provides breastfeeding assistance to women and their families in a variety of settings including inpatient and outpatient, physician offices and clinics.
Serves as a consultant in the clinical, educational and marketing aspects of lactation services to both professionals and non-professionals.
Identifies the need for collaboration and consultation with other members of the health care team. Coordinates services with other health care workers.
*Minimum Education*
Current certification of pending exam results by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLC).
If candidate does not have a current IBCLC, the candidate must be scheduled to take The International Board of Lactation Consultant Exam within six months of hire and required to pass exam within one year of hire.
30 hours of continuing education related to breastfeeding within the previous 3 years.
*Minimum Work Experience*
At least 2 years of progressive experience in breastfeeding education and lactation counseling.
Recertification and continuing education as required by IBCLC.

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire.
AHA Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required if RN (within 6 months of hire and maintain thereafter)
