Overview
**Description**
This is a first level management position for a software development team building next-gen infrastructure tools for our healthcare incubation platform.
You are a seasoned, fully functioning member of the development team, and apply a wide variety of concepts, practices, and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues in creative ways. At this level, you enable the team to operate at their best, by setting standards for codedesignoperational reviews, as well as individual 1:1s, coaching, and performance reviews. You have led Agile development ceremonies on an engineering team and own the teams’ continuous improvement mechanisms. You set the competency bar for hiring engineers on your team. You communicate proactively and effectively to the product org and senior management. You are able to work independently in your areas of expertise and are at times the lead engineer. In addition to a software engineering centric view of the world, you are a capable engineer who understands the nuances of OS level concepts on a *NIX system, networking concepts in the cloud e.g. route tables and NAT gateways, security best practices as applies across the OSI stack and a champion of quality and operational best practices of running 24×7 applications in a distributed, fault-tolerant and secure environment. You may sometimes ask for general guidance on new projects or unfamiliar areas.
This is a vital management role for the Digital Innovation Group at Providence. Key goals are:
+ Lead SRE team and engineers to deliver reliable cloud infrastructure and tools.
+ You will be a hands-on leader reviewing infrastructure as code, defining product architecture, and defining what success looks like for SRE.
+ Develop effective relationships with your peers, internalize feedback, and get buy-in for the needs of the engineering team.
+ Support engineering teams to plan, estimate, and deliver supporting infrastructure for their projects and product verticals
+ Develop Infrastructure Roadmaps and Operational Reviews for maintaining Cloud infrastructure uptime and lifecycle
+ Ride the crest of the tech wavefront with a voracious appetite for current technology trends around the world.
+ Manage, hire and develop a world-class SRE team.
+ Promote a culture of diversity and equity through hiring and developing talent and delivering the right products that support these values.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:**
**Technical Leader:**
+ Set and deliver success metrics for an engineering team including velocitydelivery, code quality, and operational effectiveness.
+ Guide and mentor team members regarding best practices including design and deployment reviews.
+ Have good knowledge Cloud Networking Infrastructure.
+ Have an in-depth understanding of how modern day web application stacks are built.
+ Be aware of best practices for observability, availability, latency, scalability and efficiency of distributed systems and applications.
+ Have intermediate to advanced knowledge in systems administration at the virtualization layer on *NIX systems.
**Quality Champion:**
+ Set “done” criteria for engineering work including designcode reviews, automated test coverage, internationalization, scaleperformance concerns, multi-tenancy, and operational effectiveness.
+ Owns continuous improvement mechanisms for their team.
**Operational Excellence:**
+ Manages the support and maintenance of an engineering team – including installation, triage, documentation, debugging.
+ Ensures an appropriate continuous integration and delivery pipeline is in place for their products, which automatically deploys and tests product to multiple tiers (stage, prod), and tenants.
+ Sets standards for monitoring operational effectiveness of their product including uptime, error rates, and root cause analysis, and change management.
+ Collaborate effectively across multiple teams and related Product and UX stakeholders.
**Leadership:**
+ You are actively involved in hiring, set the bar for technical competency for your team.
+ You complete regular goals, 1:1s, and performance reviews for your team.
**EXPERIENCE:**
+ Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics or other related scientific or engineering fields. A master’s degree (or PhD) is preferred.
+ At least 6 years of relevant industry experience shipping world class products. Demonstrated ability to build engaging mobile front ends with back-end services designed to scale. Experience with Kubernetes and Node.js is a plus.
+ At least 2 years of experience leading teams of software engineers delivering software, including setting standards for designcodedeployment best practices, and operational effectiveness.
+ At least 2 years of experience leading teams of software engineers delivering cloud-based infrastructure as code solutions using tools like Terraform, Ansible, etc.
+ At least 2 years of experience with Systems, Network and Application security best practices, threat models, defensive security best practices, writing code to test systems and applications by employing techniques such as Penetration Testing and Chaos Engineering.
+ Recent hands-on development experience setting standards for design/code/deployment best practices, and operational effectiveness.
+ Collaboration within a global environment–in-country and international teams.
+ Excellent communication and presentation skills with success in effectively communicating at all levels of an organization.
+ Organizational development skills. Positive mind set with the proven ability to build a strong organization with a positive culture.
