**Job Summary**
This role is designed within a clinical residency program for physical therapists pursuing specialized post professional clinical education and teaching. The physical therapy resident will be able to accelerate their professional development as a patient/client care provider. This role will prepare physical therapists who use best available evidence, conduct clinical research, demonstrate and practice advanced clinical skills in the specialty area of physical therapy optimally facilitate the health and healing of the patients served. Will actively participate as a physical therapist but also as a mentor. Plans, organizes and delivers physical therapy interventions to help clients/patients recover and improve their mobility, relieve pain, increase strength and prevent deformities. Conducts examinations, evaluations, and interventions for patients who are affected by injury or disease. Utilizes tools and techniques to administer physical therapy interventions following safeguards. Documents client’s/patient’s information for evaluation; establishes therapeutic plans and modifies them if necessary. Educates clients/patients and their family members about treatment plans/schedules and self-exercises to be continued at home. Knowledge of and utilizes appropriate age-related treatments and evaluations relating to the needs of clients/patients. Demonstrate and incorporate knowledge of current research into daily treatment of clients/patients.
May treat individuals of all ages with varying diagnosis and disorders. Will demonstrate documentation in accordance with departmental guidelines and meet all regulatory requirements. Demonstrates level of treatment associated with their specialty provided to their clients/patients.
Exhibits flexibility with acceptance of variable work schedules/assignments. Participates in activities to promote the department and Sanford Health. Will be interacting with individuals outside of the department including but not limited to: providers, case managers, third party payers, public organizations, etc. Will be expected to provide ongoing education and training to peers in the area(s) of expertise.
**Qualifications**
Must be a graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy program by the start of the program. Meet qualification requirements to perform high velocity low amplitude thrust manual therapy as outlined in the applicable state physical therapy practice act.
Meet all eligibility requirements to be employed as a practicing physical therapist within Sanford Health, in addition to passing criminal background check and meeting vaccination requirements.
If the residency takes place in North Dakota (ND), must have completed at least one student affiliation in the area of outpatient orthopedics or have six months of clinical experience in outpatient orthopedics.
Minimum eligibility criteria for admissions are agreed upon by core program faculty, and serve in part to meet minimum requirements to be successful in the program. The minimum criteria includes the following:
1. Graduate from a Commission for Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accredited physical therapy program and be duly qualified and eligible for licensure as a physical therapist in the state of practice, and have the ability to be licensed by the program start date.
a. If graduating from an entry-level physical therapy (PT) program, residents must disclose their examination date to the Program Director at the time of admission.
b. Applicable within the area of Sports Residency: it is required by the program that candidates have their physical therapist licensure completed (excluding temporary license) by the program start date (July 1).
Must be licensed, and in good standing, in the state(s) of practice as a Physical Therapist. A member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and member of the residency specialty area of the APTA.
Within the Sports Residency: completion of “Emergency Response” course offered through the Sports Physical Therapy Section of the APTA prior to beginning the program; requirement may be waived with evidence of possession of other emergency response credentials (ATC, EMT).
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may be required by residency needs and program.
